There is an fairly new scheme going around to help you part with your money if you have recently purchased or refinanced your house. You may get a mailing with a notice that you have to pay $83 to obtain a certified copy of your deed and if you don't do it in a certain amount of time there is an extra charge.

This appears to be a government document even though it is not. Some of these documents come from a place called Secured Document Services in Washington D.C.  There are other companies doing something similar according to the Indiana Attorney General's Office.  Their office is currently investigating this scheme.

If you want a copy of your deed, the county recorders can get you one for $1.00 according to Debbie Carnes, the Hancock County Recorder.  Carnes has appeared on WRTV 6 the Indy Channel with investigative reporter Kara Kenny to comment on this.

If you have a complaint you can file a complaint by visiting IndianaConsumer.com or by calling 800-382-5516.
